Strings and setup

Overview

Lower tunings reduce tension. Heavier gauges and a truss/intonation check restore playability and pitch definition for chugs.

Who it helps

Players moving past Drop D, or anyone whose low string buzzes or feels slack. See drop tunings.

Key features / advantages

Enough tension to mute cleanly; intonation that survives power chords up the neck.

Limitations

Heavier strings are harder to bend. A setup is not optional after a large gauge jump.

Alternatives

Stay in E standard or Drop D; use a dedicated baritone or 7-string instead of starving a 25.5" 6-string.
