Why do my chugs sound muddy?
Short answer
Usually one of five things: your palm mute is too far from the bridge, your pressure changes from hit to hit, there's too much gain, your low string is too slack for your tuning, or strings you aren't playing are ringing. Turn the gain down and record one bar to find out which.
How to find the problem
Record one bar of muted 8ths with the gain lower than usual, then listen back.
- Hits are different lengths? That's timing and mute consistency, not your amp. Work through palm muting.
- The pitch is hard to hear? Your palm is too far toward the neck. Move it back toward the saddles.
- The low string wobbles or goes sharp on hard hits? The string's too slack. Go up a gauge, especially in Drop C or lower. See drop tunings.
- There's a hiss or ring between chugs? Unused strings are ringing. Mute them with your fretting hand, and consider a noise gate.
- It all sounds like a wall of fuzz? Too much gain. Most tight rhythm tones use less than you'd expect. See amps and sims.
