Minor pentatonic
1 b3 4 5 b7. Use it over a static power-chord vamp. Add the 2 and b6 when you want natural minor without abandoning the shape you already know.
Natural minor (Aeolian)
The default “minor key” sound for a huge amount of traditional and modern metal. The b6 is the color that pentatonic leaves out.
Harmonic minor
Natural minor with a raised 7th. That half-step into the root is why harmonic-minor runs feel “classical” and tense. See glossary.
Phrygian
Natural minor with a flat 2. The half-step above the root is the flavor in a lot of “exotic” or aggressive riffs. Phrygian dominant (fifth mode of harmonic minor) raises the 3rd on top of that flat 2.
