How often should I practice metal guitar?
Most days, in short, focused sessions of about 20–45 minutes. Frequent, accurate practice builds motor skills better than one long session a week. Take a day off if your joints hurt or your form keeps breaking down.
Why little and often wins
Motor skills like picking and muting improve with frequent, accurate repetition, and they seem to stick better when practice is spread out rather than crammed into one block. A 25-minute session with one speed fragment, one mute exercise and one song fragment will do more than three unfocused hours. Here's what the research says about spacing practice.
What a good week looks like
- Five or six days of 20–45 minutes, each built around one problem. Use the session plans.
- One day off, or a day of just playing for fun.
- Record one short clip at the end of the week and compare it with last week's.
When to stop
Stop an exercise when your form changes, like when your shoulder rises, your stroke gets bigger or notes start to smear. Stop the session if anything hurts in a joint. Muscle fatigue is normal. Sharp or lingering pain isn't.
