Downpicking

Definition

Using only downward pick strokes for a passage, even when the rhythm could be alternated.

Why it matters

Uniform attack and a planted mute can sound tighter. It also fatigues the forearm if the stroke is too large.

Examples

Classic thrash 8th-note beds; some gallops mix downs with an up on the short note.
